On January 6, 2015, by reaching the Geographic South Pole as part of a 4-man international expedition Ian fulfilled a lifelong ambition and became one of the oldest people ever to ski from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole – an expedition labelled “The hardest on earth”. Antarctica is the coldest and windiest place on earth, with no permanent residents and a lowest recorded temperature of -89 C.
Visiting Antarctica was one thing, walking in the footsteps of the heroic explorers from 100 years ago, including Shackleton, Amundsen and Scott was something else.
The expedition covered over 950 KMS from the Ronne Filchner Ice Shelf to the South Pole. We hauled sleds with 120 LBS of supplies and took 44 days to reach the Pole, which is at 9,300 feet above sea level. The year prior to departure was spent on fundraising, logistics and winter training in Northern Minnesota. Closer to home, I also included running, and much to the amusement of local residents and visitors, hailing a 50LB truck tire around my village of Elora in Ontario!
Many people enabled my participation in this expedition, including those who supported my Kickstarter campaign, personal donations, local fundraising events and a number of Corporate Sponsors.
